Prof. Xiaobing Luo was awarded ASME Fellow

    Recently, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) published the list of new Fellows, and Professor Luo Xiaobing from School of Energy and Power Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was elected as ASME Fellow.

    Founded in 1880, the american society of mechanical engineers (ASME) is an international non-profit educational and technical organization with nearly 100,000 members all over the world. ASME Fellow is the highest level of membership, aiming at rewarding the winners and outstanding contributors in the field of international mechanical engineering. ASME selects Fellow every year, and the number of selected members shall not exceed one thousandth of the total number of members. The qualification examination of ASME Fellow is very strict. Those who have more than 10 years of work experience and have participated in the society for more than 10 years, or more than 20 years of work experience and have participated in the society for more than 5 years are eligible for the first step. At the same time, you need letters of recommendation from 5 senior members or 2 members; In addition, the finalists must have participated in the work of the society or made contributions, etc., and they have to break through 10 steps before they can be audited.

    Prof. Luo and his research team have made important contributions in the research fields of thermal management of power electronic devices, liquid-cooled micro-pump and advanced electronic packaging. They have established the motion model of high-speed rotating parts in fluid, revealed the suspension mechanism of hydraulic-electromagnetic coupling, invented the suspension micro-pump, and provided the core device for the high-temperature thermal management system. Among them, ultra-thin micro-pump technology was transferred to Huawei Terminal Co., Ltd. with 5 million cash. The law of heat transfer in deep-sea operation logging tool under complex boundary is expounded, and an efficient thermal management system with integration of isolation, storage and conduction is successfully developed, and it is operated in batches in CNOOC and in the South China Sea and East China Sea. The related research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, national key R&D programs and enterprise projects.

    Prof. Luo is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He is the Dean of the School of Energy and Power Engineering and the Dean of China-Europe Clean and Renewable Energy Institute, and is also an IEEE Fellow. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, his doctorate from Tsinghua University, and then worked in Samsung headquarters, and returned to China at the end of 2005 to work in Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Personally, he has successively won the nomination award of Baosteel's excellent teacher special prize in 2020, the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award in 2018 (ranked No.2), the outstanding technical achievement award of IEEE CPMT in 2016, the second prize of National Technological Invention in 2016 (ranked No.2) and the first prize of natural science in Hubei Province in 2015. The first author or correspondent published 173 SCI retrieval papers, and the first inventor authorized 55 invention patents in China, 5 patents in the United States, and published 1 monograph in both Chinese and English. He served as Associate Editor of IEEE Packaging Journal and ASME Electronic Packaging Journal respectively, and twice as Vice General Chair of ASME InterPACK Conference in 2019 and 2018.
